Black and white photograph of five young women dressed in winter clothes outside the gate of the "ELIM LUTH. / ORPHANS HOME". The home, with a dark shingle roof and light-colored siding, is visible behind them in the snow and bare trees. Two young women in dark-colored coats, skirts, stockings and boots are on the viewer left. A shorter girl in a dark-colored dress, stockings and shoes with lighter-colored apron is standing in the middle, and on the viewer right there are two girls in darker-colored dresses, stockings and boots. The girl on the far viewer right has on a light-colored beaded necklace as well. The photograph has a white border. Their names are written on the back: "Reva Philbour / Meta Larsen / Inga Westergaard / Martha Petersen / Louise Christensen." |

The photo shows Reva Philbour, Meta Larsen, Inga Westergaard, Martha Petersen and Louise Christensen in front of the gate to the Elim Children's Home. The Elk Horn Lutheran Church founded the Elim Children's Home and it opened its doors in September of 1890. Over the course of more than 70 years, over 300 children called Elim home. Included in its offerings were school education, farming and housekeeping experience, and religious guidance. It closed in September of 1961. |
