This photograph shows Elisabeth Pleak Peterson, who was married to Val Peterson. Val Peterson - full name Frederick Valdemar Erastus Peterson - was a Danish-American politician who served as Nebraska's governor 1946-1952, ambassador to Denmark 1957-1961, and ambassador to Finland 1969-1973. ------- Val Peterson's parents were Henry C. (1873-1937) and Hermanda C. (Swanberg) Peterson (1878-1964). Henry Christian Peterson immigrated to the United States from Denmark. His mother, Anna Jesperson, also came to the States, but did not officially immigrate. She spent six months with Henry, and then more time with her two daughters, Henry's sisters. Henry married Hermanda Swanberg, who was Swedish. Together, they had seven children: Val was the oldest and Fred was the second-youngest. Val Peterson was born on July 18, 1903 in Oakland, Nebraska. He graduated from Wayne State College in 1927 and the University of Nebraska in 1931. On June 6, 1929, he married Elisabeth Howells Pleak, whose hometown was Villisca, Iowa. From 1925-1930, Val taught high school in Nebraska; he served as superintendent of the Elgin public schools from 1933-1939. He also published the Elgin Review and served in World War II. In 1947, Val became Nebraska's 27th governor; he served three terms from 1947-1953. From 1953-1957 he served in President Eisenhower's cabinet. He was appointed as ambassador to Denmark from 1957-1961, and ambassador to Finland from 1969-1973. Val died on October 17, 1983. |
