Description |
Photograph: The horizontally oriented, black and white photograph depicts a group of eight men posed in a photography studio. Four men in the front row are seated in chairs and are each holding a violin and a bow. The four men in the back row are standing and, from the viewer's left, are holding a trombone, a bass, a trumpet, and a flute. The backdrop behind them depicts a curtain, a window, and some delicate architectural elements with some filigree-type designs. All the men are wearing dark, three-piece suits, light colored shirts, and a tie or bowtie. Printed on the photograph below the second man from the left in the front row is: "Snow / PHOTO". Handwritten below the third man from the left in the front row is: "Holger Pedersen". Handwritten on the grey pressed paper board on which the photograph is adhered, above the head of the man with the bass, is "Sigurd Pedersen" with an arrow pointing downward. Handwritten in the viewer's lower right corner below the photograph is: "1899". Frame: The photograph and the pressed paper board behind it are held within a wooden frame covered with reddish-brown varnish with glass across the front. Handwritten along the top edge of the back of the pressed paper board is: "Sigurd Pedersen". Handwritten near the center of the bottom edge of the pressed paper board is: "Sigurd Bass fiddle / Holger 3r, Violin". The pressed paper board is held to the frame with two nails and two metal brackets. A piece of wire is strung between two eye screws on either side of the back of the frame. |

The photograph was taken in 1899 and depicts a group of male musicians including Holger Pedersen and Sigurd Pedersen, who is the father of the donor, Allegra Stehr. Family History: Allegra Stehr is granddaughter of Hans Jorgen (H. J.) Pedersen and the daughter of his son Sigurd. Hans Jorgen Pedersen was born Dec. 28, 1851 near Ringe, Fyn, Denmark. At the age of 24, he came to the U.S. In Oct. of 1875 he was ordained to the churches in Gowen and Omegn, MI. He was there for five years, and then went to Elk Horn, IA for two; Ashland High School as the master and preacher in the church for six years; and then in the spring of 1888 the family arrived in Tyler, MN. Here he began Danebod school, serving as headmaster for five years, and then continuing to teach. He planned the cross church and was the preacher until the fall of 1903 when they moved to Ruthton. HIs last sermon was New Years Day 1905. He passed away from cancer July 20, 1905. Upon the death of Pastor Hans Jorgen Pedersen, his son Sigurd received H.J.'s sermons and edited them. |
