Each man is wearing a dark suit, light-colored shirt and tie. The photo has a thin white border. Typed on two labels on the back are the words, "Meeting of American Ambassadors to / the Nordic Countries - Stockholm / May 25-27, 1971" and "WITH P.M. / PALME" is written on the right side. Based upon research from the label on the back, the men are likely, viewer left to right: Jerome Heartwell "Brud" Holland (ambassador to Sweden), Guilford Dudley (ambassador to Denmark), Val Peterson (ambassador to Finland), Prime Minister of Sweden Olof Palme, Philip K. Crowe (ambassador to Norway), and Luther I. Replogle (ambassador to Iceland). |

The meeting of the American Ambassadors to the Nordic Countries with Prime Minister of Sweden Olof Palme took place May 25-27, 1971. Val Peterson was serving as the ambassador to Finland during this time - he is third from the viewer left. The other men likely are, viewer left to right: Jerome Heartwell "Brud" Holland (ambassador to Sweden), Guilford Dudley (ambassador to Denmark), Val Peterson (ambassador to Finland), Prime Minister of Sweden Olof Palme, Philip K. Crowe (ambassador to Norway), and Luther I. Replogle (ambassador to Iceland). ------------------------ Val Peterson's parents were Henry C. (1873-1937) and Hermanda C. (Swanberg) Peterson (1878-1964). Henry Christian Peterson immigrated to the United States from Denmark. His mother, Anna Jesperson, also came to the States, but did not officially immigrate. She spent six months with Henry, and then more time with her two daughters, Henry's sisters. Henry married Hermanda Swanberg, who was Swedish. Together, they had seven children: Val was the oldest and Fred was the second-youngest. Val Peterson was born on July 18, 1903 in Oakland, Nebraska. He graduated from Wayne State College in 1927 and the University of Nebraska in 1931. On June 6, 1929, he married Elisabeth Howells Pleak, whose hometown was Villisca, Iowa. From 1925-1930, Val taught high school in Nebraska; he served as superintendent of the Elgin public schools from 1933-1939. He also published the Elgin Review and served in World War II. In 1947, Val became Nebraska's 27th governor; he served three terms from 1947-1953. From 1953-1957 he served in President Eisenhower's cabinet. He was appointed as ambassador to Denmark from 1957-1961, and ambassador to Finland from 1969-1973. Val died on October 17, 1983. |
