Black and white photograph on a cream cardboard backing of two women standing behind a bar wearing dark long sleeve sweaters with light-colored shirts underneath. There is a man standing at the front of the bar dressed in light pants, dark top jacket and hat. There are plaques and pictures on the wall behind the women. To the viewer's left are wood booths for sitting and a round table with wire chairs in the front middle floor. In the very back is a archway that leads into another part of the building with a tall dark wood burning stove with a man seated in a chair next to it. A white paper label attached to the back reads "1942 / Plainfield, Iowa. / Ran a TAVERN & Restaurant". |

This photograph shows a tavern & restaurant in Plainfield, Iowa, likely operated by Carl and Jane Marie Ekwall. ------------------ Carl M. and Jane Marie Holm Ekwall came from the Bornholm region of Denmark. Carl was born August 28, 1891 and Jane Marie was born January 8, 1892. Carl arrived in America in 1914 through Ellis Island. He sent for Jane Marie Holm in 1915. They were married in Cedar Falls, Iowa on January 28, 1916. The museum has Jane's wedding dress in the collection. Carl and Jane Marie had two children - Lillian Marie and Edward. Carl and Jane Marie farmed and raised their children in Nashua, Iowa. Once their children were grown, Carl and Jane Marie moved around Iowa managing different taverns. In 1947, Carl and Jane Marie moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where their daughter Lillian lived. See file for more information. Lillian married Bill Griefnow in 1938. Later that year, Janet (née Griefnow) Russell was born. In 1942, Edward joined the Air Force and served in World War II from August 1942 until December of 1945. Edward married Leola Bartl on March 7, 1942. In 1944, Edward and Leola had a son, William Carl "Bill" Ekwall. William Carl "Bill" became a police officer in 1971. He and wife Denise had three children- William, Jamie, and Lyndsey. Edward died in 1947 at the young age of 28. Jane Marie died November 21, 1952. Carl died April 14, 1962. Lillian Ekwall Griefnow died October 18, 1984. All were buried in Nashua, IA. William Carl "Bill" Ekwall died of cancer on July 15, 1989. He is buried in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City, Iowa. |
