Description |
Black and white photo of what might be a painting. The image features a large table at the center of the room. The table has long boards on top and turned legs below. On the viewer's left of the table is an armchair with an upholstered seat. There is a long bench on the right along the window. Plants are on the window sill and curtains over the window. On the far wall are two framed pictures, one on either side of an Amager shelf, a triangular shelf with four layers. To the viewer's right of those is a single cabinet with a door decorated with diamond shaped designs. The lower third of the wall is paneled. The edges of the photo are scalloped. There is white trim around the outside of the photo image. On back is handwritten a message in green ink, in Danish, faint enough to be illegible. Stamped near the bottom center in purple is "polyfoto / AXELTORV 1 - NÆSTVED / TELEFON 1595" and written in blue in the lower left corner is "In Denmark". |

Provenance |
This is from Opal Peterson's husband's side of the family. Clarence Peterson was born to Peter Petersen and Anna Anderson Petersen, and was one of six children. This image depicts the Petersen home in Denmark. The large table is said to have been given to a museum there. Clarence was the only child to marry, and Clarence and Opal had one child, Jane. Jane resides in a home for the mentally challenged. Opal Mildred Peterson was born Nov. 13, 1920 in Santiago Township, Minnesota to Charles and Annie (Johnson) Alickson. She was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member of Glendorado Lutheran Church. Opal attended country school in Santiago, and then graduated from Princeton High School in 1939. In the early 1940s, she taught in Blue Hill Township and Mille Lacs county. She married Clarence Peterson on June 19, 1948, and worked at Santiago State Bank for 10 years before going back to college to get her teaching degree in the early 1960s. She again taught in rural schools and finally at Becker School District, retiring as a first grade teacher in 1983. Opal's husband's family immigrated to the U.S. from Denmark in the late 1800s. Santiago was settled by a number of Danish immigrants. The Santiago Norwegian Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1882. In 1927, the church's name was changed to South Santiago Evangelical Lutheran Church. |
