Description |
Black and white photograph of rows of single-story wooden buildings laid out in a grid. It is a refugee camp for displaced Germans on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. There is a central dirt road running through the buildings with a few people walking here and there. There is a tree line in the background with a domed building rising above it. There is a typed label upside-down on the back. It reads: "Among the post-war burdens inflicted on Denmark was the / support of 210,000 German refugees, who were transported to Denmark / by the German occupation authorities in contravention of international / law. They were most unwelcome. / To get rid of them again since the / peace has been a big and unsolved problem. Immediately after the / liberation of the isle of Bornholm the Russian authorities removed / the 20,000 refugees there, but apart from these it has been impossible, / up to Jan. 1, 1947 to get rid of more than 7,500. The refugees cost / the Danish state 200 Mill. Kroner [cost underlined] a year (about 10 mill. or 40 / mill. Dollars). Picture shows one of their camps, situated on the / outskirts of Copenhagen." Below the label to the right is a black stamp: "Please return to / DANISH INFORMATION / OFFICE / 280 Park Avenue / New York, N. Y. 10017". Handwritten near the proper top of the back is "P. 3095" in navy ink, which is crossed out in bright blue with "3294" written over it. |
