Description |
Black and white photograph of a room full of approximately twenty young men and women. They are seated at plank desks, each writing with pen and paper. A man, likely the teacher, stands at the front of the classroom to the viewer left. He is dressed in dark-colored clothing. The photo has a white border. There is a type label attached to the back. It reads: "The German occupation authorities - in contravention of / international law - forced upon Denmark 210,000 German refugees, / whom they billeted in schools, hotels, etc. After the peace the / Danish State built a number of barrack camps for these very unwel- / come guests, until such time as they can again be received in their / homeland, which is a big and unsolved problem. One of the camps / with 17,000 refugees is situated on the outskirts of Copenhagen. All / the work in the camps is done by the refugees under Danish supervision. / The Danish State regards it as a duty to try to train the young people / in the camps into democratic citizens until they can all be returned. / Picture shows one of the senior classes working with an anti-Nazi / teacher. The refugees cost the Danish State 200 mill. Kroner [cost underlined] a year / (about L10 mill or 40 mill. Dollars)". "P. 3095" is written underneath, then scribbled out with lighter blue ink and "3294" written upside down below it. "Please return to / DANISH INFORMATION / OFFICE / 280 Park Avenue / New York, N. Y. 10017" is stamped in faded black in the lower right corner. |
