Description |
Black and white photo of five men standing on what appears to be a railroad cart. There is a house in the background on the viewer's right and trees around. There is what appears to be a rail line in the foreground, over which is the cart. The cart has four wheels, a flat, low frame, and a sort of triangular frame attached above. There are things piled on the cart as well Two men are standing on the near side of the cart and three on the other. All are wearing work clothes--pants and long sleeved shirts, and four of them have on suspenders. The man on the viewer's far right wears overalls. All wear hats. The photo is attached to a beige paperboard backing. There is writing over much of the back in pencil and it is oriented upside down when the photo is right-side-up. When the latter is true, there is an additional handwritten note in the viewer's upper right that reads "Peter Peterson / Jane's grandfather / short man in the / back / row". There are scribbles along the right edge. The text in pencil appears to be a name repeated many times--"Peter Peterson". Also visible is "Lilly", "Elizza", "Elizzabeth", "John", and "Harald Peterson". |

Provenance |
This is from Opal Peterson's husband's side of the family. This might be on the Peterson/Petersen farm in Denmark. Clarence was the only child to marry, and Clarence and Opal had one child, Jane. Jane resides in a home for the mentally challenged. Opal Mildred Peterson was born Nov. 13, 1920 in Santiago Township, Minnesota to Charles and Annie (Johnson) Alickson. She was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member of Glendorado Lutheran Church. Opal attended country school in Santiago, and then graduated from Princeton High School in 1939. In the early 1940s, she taught in Blue Hill Township and Mille Lacs county. She married Clarence Peterson on June 19, 1948, and worked at Santiago State Bank for 10 years before going back to college to get her teaching degree in the early 1960s. She again taught in rural schools and finally at Becker School District, retiring as a first grade teacher in 1983. Opal's husband's family immigrated to the U.S. from Denmark in the late 1800s. Santiago was settled by a number of Danish immigrants. The Santiago Norwegian Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1882. In 1927, the church's name was changed to South Santiago Evangelical Lutheran Church. |
