Description |
One of thirty-four black and white photographs that were in an album owned by Johannes Otto Petersen. This is a photograph of a man and a boy. The man is wearing a suit, a white shirt, a tie, and a hat. He is holding his suit coat over his proper left shoulder and has his proper right hand up to his face. The boy is wearing a short-sleeve white shirt that ties up the v neck front, and dark pants. It appears to be a sailor suit. He has blond hair. In the foreground to the viewer's left is a small toy tractor or car. Behind the subjects is a street with row houses. On the back is stamped an image of a bear, around which is "GENUINE KRYSTAL GLOSS / GUARANTEED FOREVER / APR 20 1932 / BEAR PHOTO SERVICE". Also stamped is "72". |

Provenance |
According to the stamp on the back, the photograph was developed on April 20, 1932. 1985.010.003, 1985.010.027, and 1985.010.028 are of the same subjects and were likely taken on the same day based on the subjects' clothing. The photos in this accession relate to the donor's step-father's younger brother Johannes Otto Petersen. Shortly before his death he had given John an album of photos taken during his years in the U.S. Johannes Otto Petersen's hometown was Fredericia, Denmark. He worked in the 1920s as a linotypist with the Danish Lutheran Publishing House in Nebraska. On his return to Denmark he spent the rest of his life as a linotypist with Politiken Newspaper. He died in 1982. The donor removed the photographs from their original album. June Sampson identified some of the locations in the photographs in her Thank You Letter to the donor as Blair, Nebraska; Racine, Wisconsin; California; and Montana. |
