Description |
Black and white photograph of a large group, including Sigrund H. Garner, posing in front of a building. There are only four men and one boy in the whole group; the rest are young women and female children. The women are all in light, short-sleeved women. Most of the women have short, curled hair. The three young girls in the front row and the man in the second row on the viewer's far left are seated or kneeling. The second row is sitting while the rest of the group is standing. Many people appear to be standing on stairs or the railing. The building behind them has four windows visible with a large double white door in the middle. On the ground in the background are shrubs. In the margin on the top is "Summer Session '34". In the upper left and bottom right corners are black, bone-shaped paper photo corners, which were likely used to mount the photograph on something at one time. |

This photograph is of a class of young women at the summer school in 1934. The donor is in the fifth row, second from the left (there is a line extending from the margin to the top of the donor's head). The man kneeling in the second row with his hands on his knees, wearing a shirt and tie, is identified at Knudsen's son, with the note that he was a very good teacher. The photographs were passed down to the donor by her mother, Anna Holm. The photographs reflect history of donor's family and their life and events in Tyler, MN. The donor was born April 18, 1917 in Tyler Minnesota. She was baptized on May 17, 1917. Sigrund attended a Danish one room school in Tyler until 4th grade. She was taught English in the morning and Danish in the afternoon. She graduated from Tyler High School in 1935. The donor attended folk school in the summer where she was taught gymnastics, folk dancing, Danish songs, handcrafts including knitting and crochet, and Danish fairytales. After high school she attended Mankato State Teacher's College for elementary education for three years, hoping to be a teacher. In 1940 she married Franklin Hadd. Over the next few years she moved to California, Austin, Minnesota, and finally to Baltimore. She had one daughter, Jacqueline, who was born in 1940. Sigrund was active in various flower and plant clubs and shows. She married Thomas A. Garner in 1989. Donor's relatives on WOH are George Holm (father) and Jorgen Johansen and Kristine Haufgaard Johansen (maternal grandparents). |
