Description |
Black and white photo of a church with a tall rounded steeple. The church is "L" shaped and has several windows. The front doors appear to be under the steeple. There is a bell tower at the top of the steeple. There is a medium sized tree about halfway down the long side of the church. It appears to be winter as there is snow on the roof and ground. Photo is attached to an off-white matteboard. On back, in pencil, is "Daniel S. 1904 / my church in Franklin Co." and in pen below "1968 / Good shape, only alteration a minor / change of steeple. Built in the 80s. / Cross addition added in / the late 90s." "DANIEL SORENSEN" across stamped in the center. (This church does not appear to be St. Paul's or St. John's from Ringsted, Iowa, as shown in other photos in this gift. -AS 2007) |

Provenance |
This church is not directly identified, but is most likely St. John's Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Coulter, Franklin County, Iowa. The writing on the back identifies it as in Franklin County; it was likely built in the 1880's, attended by Daniel Sorensen in 1904, and still in existence in 1968. The structure also matches photograph in the 2015 National Historic Register nomination for St. John's Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church Historic District. ------------- See the file for family information. |
