This photograph shows the gymnastics class at the Danebod Folk School summer program in 1933. Sigrund H. Garner is in the second row with the white headband. It is possible the man at the center is Viggo Tarnow. ----------- Sigrund (Holm) Garner was born April 18, 1917 in Tyler, Minnesota. She was baptized on May 17, 1917. Sigrund attended a Danish one-room school in Tyler until 4th grade. She was taught English in the morning and Danish in the afternoon. She graduated from Tyler High School in 1935. The donor attended folk school in the summer where she was taught gymnastics, folk dancing, Danish songs, handcrafts including knitting and crochet, and Danish fairytales. After high school, she attended Mankato State Teacher's College for elementary education for three years, hoping to be a teacher. In 1940 she married Franklin Hadd. Over the next few years she moved to California, Austin, Minnesota, and finally to Baltimore, Maryland. She had one daughter, Jacqueline, who was born in 1940. Sigrund was active in various flower and plant clubs and shows. She married Thomas A. Garner in 1989. Her father, George Holm, and maternal grandparents Jorgen Johansen and Kristine Haufgaard Johansen are on the museum's Wall of Honor. |
