Description |
Black and white photograph of a bombed-out train car. There is rubble strewn throughout the car's interior and piled on the floor, windows are shattered, wires are hanging from the ceiling, and more. Oriented horizontally, there is a typed label attached to the back center. It reads: "GERMAN COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IN DENMARK SABOTAGED [title underlined] / On the night of February 23, 1945, the special train of General / von Lindemann, since the beginning of February commander-in-chief / of the German Forces in Denmark, was attached[as is] by Danish patriots / who placed bombs on the railway. The train was severely damaged in / derailment by the General escaped unhurt. As a first revenge he / ordered the nearest farm yard to be burned down. The following night he had bombs placed in a Danish passenger express train. An / explosion occurred South of Aalborg, 10 innocent Danes were killed, / 36 seriously injured. / A waggon of the senseless German destruction. / DANISH COUNCIL INFORMATION OFFICE PICTURE 9166." There is a blue stamp in the lower right. Handwritten above it in black is "Please return to:". The stamp reads: "ROYAL DANISH EMBASSY / 3200 WHITEHAVEN STREET, N.W. / WASHINGTON, D.C. 20008". |

The train was bombed by German General von Lindemann, the commander-in-chief of the Danish occupation, in retaliation for a sabotage attempt on his train. |
