Description |
Black and white photograph of a group of children having a picnic in a grove. There are twenty boys and girls of various ages gathered around a light-colored blanket on the ground, most seated and looking at the camera. The girl in the center crouched by the blanket has a blue "X" inked on her leg. In the back, there is one girl in a light-colored dress standing with her arms crossed and looking off to the viewer left. An older woman with a blue "2" inked on her light-colored dress is standing on the viewer right side. The photograph has a white border. The writing on the back reads: "Having lunch in the grove. Aug. 25, 1921." and, sideways, "X Christine" and "2 Mamma Petersen". |

The children of the Elim Children's Home, including Christine, are picnicking in the grove with Mamma Petersen on August 25, 1921. The Elk Horn Lutheran Church founded the Elim Children's Home and it opened its doors in September of 1890. Over the course of more than 70 years, over 300 children called Elim home. Included in its offerings were school education, farming and housekeeping experience, and religious guidance. It closed in September of 1961. |
