Description |
Black and white photo of six men dressed in uniform. The men are posed at tables. All have similar coats with two rows of buttons up the front. The man on the viewer's left is Peder Peterson/Petersen. He is seated on a chair and facing the camera. He has lighter pants on. His proper left arm is resting on the table next to him, and his right on his lap. The next man is standing behind the table and leaning on a cabinet beside him. The next man is reclining on an upholstered seat or couch and has a newspaper in his hands. He also wears a hat. The next man has a sash or band to hold a sword sheath over his chest and front. He also has lighter pants on. His proper left arm is resting on the table in front of him. The final two men are also seated at the table. The next to last has his hands resting on the table, and the final (Kristian Pedersen) is holding a book or something similar, as well as a cigar, in front of him. This man also has a hat on. There is a large plaque on the wall behind the men with two weapons crossed behind it. Swords are leaned against the first table, and bottles are set on each table and cabinet. The photo is attached to a grayish brown paper with a greenish gold line border. The corners all have a sort of scrolled and heart shaped design. Under the first man on the viewer's left is written in blue "Peder Pedersen" and under the last man on the right is "Kristian / Pedersen". There is nothing written on the back. |

Provenance |
This is from Opal Peterson's husband's side of the family. The note in this gift (see 2010.33.6) is a direct reference to this photo of soldiers which includes brothers Peter and Kristian Peterson. The writer (perhaps a sister to Peter and Kristian, or other family member?) essentially says Clarence, Peter's son, would probably like to see a photo of his father in his soldier's uniform. Clarence was the only child to marry, and Clarence and Opal had one child, Jane. Jane resides in a home for the mentally challenged. Opal Mildred Peterson was born Nov. 13, 1920 in Santiago Township, Minnesota to Charles and Annie (Johnson) Alickson. She was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member of Glendorado Lutheran Church. Opal attended country school in Santiago, and then graduated from Princeton High School in 1939. In the early 1940s, she taught in Blue Hill Township and Mille Lacs county. She married Clarence Peterson on June 19, 1948, and worked at Santiago State Bank for 10 years before going back to college to get her teaching degree in the early 1960s. She again taught in rural schools and finally at Becker School District, retiring as a first grade teacher in 1983. Opal's husband's family immigrated to the U.S. from Denmark in the late 1800s. Santiago was settled by a number of Danish immigrants. The Santiago Norwegian Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1882. In 1927, the church's name was changed to South Santiago Evangelical Lutheran Church. |
