The photograph shows Ove, Arne, Viggo, Milton, Ivan, Ruth, Norval and Naomi Nielsen, Thyra Østergaard Nielsen's children. It was taken in approximately 1925. Thyra's parents, Kristian and Kristine Østergaard, are on the museum's Wall of Honor. They emigrated in 1878 and 1892, settling in Tyler, Minnesota. Stine (Maren Kristine Svendensen) was Kristian's first wife; together they had six children. Helga was born in 1885 and Thyra in 1890, both in Støvring, Denmark. Thyra Østergaard married Harald (or Harold) Peter Nielsen - the son of Peder Odgaard and Maren Kirstine Nielsen - on June 4, 1911 in a double-wedding with her sister Helga, who married Anton Buhl. Thyra and Harald had nine children and lived on a farm west of Tyler, Minnesota for much of their lives. Anton and Helga lived on an adjacent farm which fronted a road one mile south. Their eight children would often cross the fields between their farm homes to play with the Nielsen children. Thyra Ostergaard Nielsen is on the museum's Wall of Honor, as are Peder Odgaard Kristensen Nielsen and Maren Kirstine Hansen Graesbøll Nielsen. There is additional information about both families in the accession file. |
