Description |
Large black and white photograph of the Merrill's Grove Sunday School in 1915. In this photo there are many men, women, children, and babies. The back two rows of people are standing, the middle rows are kneeling, and the closest rows are seated on the long grass on the ground. There is a group of children all dressed in white seated to the viewer's right. The women are all wearing dresses with coats, and the men are in suits. Many people have hats on. There is a very large tree in the background, as well as some trees in the distance. There is a caption written along the bottom which reads "MERRILLS GROVE SUNDAY SCHOOL 1915 Photo by M". The print is between two pieces of mat. The top piece of mat is brown with a darker brown border around the print. There is a studio mark in the bottom right corner which reads "M. Knudsen / ART. STUDIO / KIMBALLTON, IOWA.". |

According to the caption, this photograph is of Merrill's Grove Sunday School in 1915. Pastor Markus Jensen was a Baptist missionary working in Harlan. He organized the Danish Baptists in Harlan in 1886. They held services in Merrill's Grove, and the Danish Baptist Church of Merrill's Grove was organized in 1893, and located near Poplar, Iowa. By 1903 the church had 75 members. A new building was built in Fiscus, Iowa in 1931 after the original building burned the year before. |
