Summary / Description |
Hardcover book, blue with gold details. On the front cover is the title and author at the top, the publisher at the bottom, and an illustration of a man raising a shovel over his head and the sun in the sky at the center. Inside the front cover is stamped in red "Finn B. Eriksen / Director of Health and Physical Education" and the same again (though blurry) in purple just below. On the facing page is written text that isn't entirely legible at the top center and then "F. _ Eriksen". The purple stamp is found on the outer edge of the title page and along the outer edge of the inside of the back cover. The red stamp is the top center of the inside back cover. Contains 133 numbered pages of text, photos, and ads. 4 3/4 x 7 PROVENANCE: Finn Eriksen was a native of Denmark. He received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1931 and his master's from Columbia University in 1932. Finn Eriksen was an outstanding gymnast in his native country, spending over 50 years as a competitor, coach, official, and educator of wrestling. He was one of the first ISTC wrestlers to win the Midwest AAU 135 pound titles in 1929 and 1931. While studying for his master's he wrestled for the exclusive New York Athletic Club. Eriksen started his coaching career at New HAmpton (IA) High School. He left in 1935 to take a teaching and coaching position at Waterloo West, and led the westling team to its first state title in 1942. Following WWII, Eriksen returned to Waterloo and was appointed Director of Health and Physical Education for the school system in 1947. Finn Eriksen served as official and judge at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helinski, Finland. He was appointed Metropolitan Athletic Director in 1971. In 1983, he was inducted into the National Wresling Hall of Fame and is a member of several other Halls of Fame and national organizations. In addition, he has authored many articles published in professional journals and magazines. He retired in Waterloo, IA. |
