Hardcover book with black spine. On the front cover is a color image of two children looking out a window at snow-covered mountains. There is a train in the distance. The girl is holding a doll in her arms. The title is above. Inside on the front cover is a round white paper sticker with black print - "AXEL H. ANDERSEN, Inc. / 212 BROWN BLOCK / OMAHA, NEB." with a Viking ship at the center. On the facing page at the top is a handwritten inscription dated February 16, 1920, but parts of it are illegible - "____ til Lykke ___ Kaj og Svend / fra Møster ____". Text and color illustrations inside. 9 1/2 x 6 5/8 PROVENANCE: This book was given to the Muller twins, Kai and Svend, in 1920. There is an inscription with a name, but it is illegible to the cataloger. It was given to them by their aunt Gudrun (Mrs. Jens) West in Kimballton, Iowa. The twins were born February 16, 1912. Their father was Thorvald G. Muller, a prominent businessman in Kimballton, Iowa, and the donor's father-in-law through Ove Muller, another of T.G.'s sons. Thorvald George Muller was born in Brostrup, Denmark on June 7, 1873. He came to the U.S. in 1884 at the age of 11 with his parents Jess and Johanne Muller, two brothers, and two sisters. The family originally farmed near Ord, Nebraska. In 1904, after starting to farm on his own, T.G. placed an ad in a Danish newspaper for a housekeeper. Mette Jensen Overgaard, from near Aarhus, answered the ad and came to Nebraska. The two were married September 30, 1904, in Kimballton, Iowa where T.G. had family, and then the couple returned to Nebraska for a few years before selling the farm and returning permanently to Kimballton. T.G. ran several businesses including a grocery store. T.G. died February 24, 1952, and Mette on June 19, 1968. |
