Scope / Description |
Journal kept by Annelise Clement on her trip from Copenhagen to Seattle in early 1948. The journal is written in a notebook that has been bound in brown paper. There are four cuts in the binding to allow the book to open. Under the binding the notebook has a black and white cover with spots of red and green. It has a red spine and a white square on the front side. On the inside of the front part of the cover there is a blue sticker with white writing on it. On the two first pages are list of dates, distances traveled, and positions. The next 38 pages all have handwriting in blue and black ink. The first page is dated February 28, 1948, and the last date entered is April 1, 1948. After the two first pages the following pages are numbered 1 through 41. The journal is mostly in English apart from the second page which has a table with mostly Danish headings. In the journal Annelise describes her and her mother's journey from Copenhagen to the USA. She describes life on board the ship, their relationship with the crew and the other passengers, and their excursions at St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, and Cristobal, Panama. The last entry is on April 1, 1948, at which point they had reached Long Beach, California. 7 1/4 8 3/4. |
