Scope / Description |
One piece of Danish scrip, or currency, relating to the Slesvig Plebiscit. This piece is rectangular and horizontal in orientation. On one side is an outer border of white, then yellow, and then green. On either side is a thick border (in green) of leaves on a vine. At the top is "SLESVIG" and at the bottom is "PLEBISCIT". Inside the opening in the green borders is a sunrise scene over grounds with a rock formation on the viewer's left and a homested on the right. At the bottom of that "window" is a black lion on either side of a shield-shaped piece that is blue inside with a white "25 / pf." inside. On the other side is a white border, then a scalloped blue one, and then red and green. The main background of this side is pale yellow. In the upper viewer's left is a circle, inside of which is a windmill with a Danish flag outside. In the lower right circle is a train beside a station with a Danish flag flying. At the top center is "VOJENS / KOMMUNE" inside a brown curved bar. Below this is "25" and then "PFENNIG / KOMMUNEFORSTANDEREN / Lelunidt (?)". In the upper right is "No. 19035" and in the lower left is "UGYLDIG / 1 MAANED EFTER / BEKENDGØRELSE / IMODERSMAALET". Just outside the border on the lower right edge is "E2H & KUNZE, FLENSBURG." 3 13/16 x 2 5/16 Provenance: Several years before the time of donation, these pieces were given to the donor by a friend, Carol Laursen. Her father likely picked them up during a trip to Denmark in the mid to late 1920s. Her father, Jens Christensen of Chicago, had immigrated to the U.S. in 1916. Carol's mother's uncle, Peter Bertelsen of Kimballton, IA, also collected stamps so she feels it possible that these pieces may have been part of that collection instead of belonging to her father Jens. |
