Scope / Description |
Hardcover autograph album, horizontally oriented. Maroon covers. On front in gold is "ALBUM" in gold at the bottom. Angled at the upper left is a gray "C" shape with black details and flanked on top and left side by a white panel with black detailing which creates a floral design. In the upper right is a green section with black detailing, creating the same floral design. Bordering these sections are gold bars with leaves and scrolled designs. On back is imprinted a large floral and leaf design, no color. Inside the front cover on the facing page is written "J.M. Schmidt. / Fredsville, / Iowa." Pages are unnumbered and unlined. Several have been written on and several have small stickers adhered to them. There are also several clovers inserted and pressed between pages. They are now protected in sleeves, but still inserted in their original locations. In case they slip out of place, the original locations are: Geo. C. Nelson of Greenville, MI (straight stem and three leaves, all loose) Louis Morgenson of Denmark, KS (straight stem connected to two leaves, four loose pieces) S. Anker (straight stem and four leaves, connected) P.J. Morgenson (short curved stem and four leaves, connected) Emma Soholm (short squiggly stem, few leaves, connected) Anna Hansen (L-shaped stem, four leaves, connected) 6 1/8 x 4 PROVENANCE: The autograph book belonged to Johanne Schmidt Nielsen, the donor's mother, and relates to her time at Elk Horn Folk School, or Højskole, in Iowa. Most of the entries are from 1892, presumably when she attended, though a few are from her parents. The first entry is from her mother in 1885 and the second from her father in 1886. There is also an entry toward the back dating to 1896 from Hansine Slifsgaard, perhaps Johanne's mother's sister. Johanne was born in 1875 in Fredsville, Iowa, and died in 1955 in Des Moines. Her parents were Jorgen Schmidt (b. 1846, Stubbum, Denmark; d. 1922, Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Marie Kirstine Slifsgaard Schmidt (b. 1849, Stubbum Denmark; d. 1887, Fredsville, Iowa). |
