Scope / Description |
One page of a letter to Annelise from her maternal aunt Karen Laugesen, and a matching envelope. Letter: The page is written on typewriter, and it has "København, 7. Septbr.1956." along the center of the top edge. The back side is blank. The letter opens "Kære lille Annelise,". The page is closely written. There is no ending or signature. In the letter, Karen thanks Annelise for a View-Master that Annelise sent her for her birthday, and she writes that some guests that she had really enjoyed watching the pictures from the state of Washington. She writes that Europe has nothing that can compete with their surroundings for them to come visit, but that instead it has works of art that date back to the classical antiquity. She then writes that the disks with the pictures are very expensive in Denmark, and she asks how much they cost in the U.S., suggesting that her sister, Annelise's mother, could pay for some disks on her behalf for the time being. She also asks wether there are disks with pictures of Italy, Switzerland, and France. She writes that she could have maybe bought some on the trip to Sweden that she has just returned from, except she did not know exactly what kind of a thing the View-Master was. She then writes about a letter that she has received from a friend in Sweden. She also mentions that another friend has just returned from the U.S. but that she has not been over to see her yet. Then she writes that she has sent a description of her trip to Lapland inside a magazine that she has sent to Annelise's mother. She then writes about an acquaintance who just passed away. The lady lived in Italy and worked at a convent. She then writes that the weather in September has been good, and she writes that the year's harvest seems to be promising. Then she writes about a letter from Annelise's paternal aunt Gerda, who left the summer cottage early because of bad weather. She also writes that Gerda will be celebrating Christmas in Copenhagen, and she writes about the senior discount on trian tickets that is available to Gerda. Then she writes that Karen Jensen was very happy to receive Annelise's letter. She writes that Karen Jensen's tenant has moved out and that she has to prepare the room before a new tenant can move in. Then she asks if Annelise and Warder are going on an autumn holiday, or if they will spend some time on the new boat that Warder build for them. 8 1/2 x 11. Envelope: Both the address on the front and the one on the back of the envelope is written on typewriter. Near the top corner to the viewer's left on the front, the words "5 Gram" are underlined with a dotted line. In the address on the front, the words "FOX ISLAND, WASHINGTON." are also underlined with a dotted line. In the top corner to the viewer's right are two Danish, brown postage stamps with the picture of king Frederik IX on them. Across the postage stamp furthest to the viewer's right is a postal mark, and across the one furthest to the viewer's left is a stamp with black text and a drawing. The text is "Læg / aldrig / penge i / alm breve", with "aldrig" underlined, and there is a thin black frame around the text and the drawing. Below the stamps, "12/56" is written in pencil. The envelope is addressed to "Mrs. W. W. Stoaks,", and the sender is Karen Laugesen. The postal mark on the front is from Copenhagen, and it is dated September 7, 1956. 5 x 6. |
