Scope / Description |
Letter written to Mrs. Karl Sørensen from Povl Bang-Jensen, Charge d'Affaires a.i. of Denmark. This letter was written to the donor's mother, Jenny Sorensen, in conjunction with a medal for her "contribution to Denmark's cause during the years of Nazi occupation." Jenny Sorensen worked as an actress in the Danish theatre of Chicago. One play was written by playright Kaj Munk (who was a Protestant priest, executed by the Nazis for his anti-Nazi writings). In the play, Jenny Sorensen, played a Jewish woman who was persecuted by the Nazis in Denmark. This play, illustrated to the Danish community of Chicago, the threat to Danish Jews in Denmark. The donor believes that this play, among others she was in, helped to promulgate the Danish culture in America. Overall, the letter is in good condition. There is a red stamp in the (viewer's) upper right hand corner that reads, "Legation De Danemark, with a crown-symbol in the middle." There is a central paragraph, with an ink signature of "Povl Bang-Jensen." The paper is lightly yellowed, with some darker staining around the outer edges. There are two horizontal fold-creases, from being tri-folded, with wrinkles along both fold-creases and the outer edges, and there are some black flecks throughout the front side of the page. The back side of the page has the same fold-creases, yellowing, and wrinkles noted on the front side, with more dark yellowing along the two fold-creases. There are a few faint, black smudge lines along the bottom/center of the page and the text and on the front side shows through to the back. |
