Scope / Description |
Autograph album, horizontally oriented. The front cover of the album has a color illustration with many different elements: a sun with a face/rays, water with fish, a bamboo-like terrace, decorative waves, 5-petal flowers, a green vining plant, and a semi-circle covered with wall paper with pink, blue, white, green flowers. Inside the front cover, written in pencil, " T = / 8 cents 2 for 15". The title page reads "Album" in a scrolling gold-colored print that is decorated by an angel, flowers, and a bird. Also on the title page is "Emma Nielsen", written in pencil in cursive. Some of the inner pages have messages to Emma from classmates (all written in Danish). The inside and outside of the back cover are plain. Dimensions: Width: 6.25" Length: 3.9375" PROVENANCE: This autograph album belonged to the donor Rose's mother, Emma Valentina Christiana Nielsen Hinrichsen, and was likely from her time at Nysted Folk School (Højskole) since entries name Nysted along with the date. It was left in Valentina's house after she died. Valentina was born Dec. 8, 1878, in Nysted, Nebraska, and died Sept. 8, 1961, in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. Her mother was Bodil Marie Nielsen, born February 9, 1851 in Dahler, Schlesvig. She immigrated to the U.S. in the first few years of the 1870s, and was married to Niels Nielsen on August 18, 1872 in Nebraska. |
