Letter to Annelise from her paternal aunt Gerda Clement. Matching envelope. Letter: Three loose pages with writing on the front. The letter is written in hand in blue ink. Page two and three are numbered in the top corner to the viewer's left. Page one is numbered in the top corner to the viewer's left on the back side of the page. The back sides of the pages are otherwise blank. In the top corner to the viewer's right on the front of the first page, it says "Sønderborg 28/1 1957". Between the main body of text and the top of the page are a few lines written upside-down, and the last line continues down along the edge to the viewer's left and along the first part of the bottom edge. The letter opens "Min kære lille Annelise!". The paper has a watermark with a picture of an airplane. In the letter, Gerda congratulates Annelise on her upcoming birthday. She writes that she misses Annelise and that she is looking very much forward to seeing her as well as Warder sometime in the future. She then thanks Annelise and Warder for their Christmas greeting with the picture of their three dogs. She also writes that she is very impressed with the pictures that Warder takes, and that she is very happy to hear that Annelise enjoy receiving pictures from her as well. She writes about her and her sister Ellen's Christmas vacation in Copenhagen, and she mentions visits to various friends and family members who live in Copenhagen, including Annelise's maternal aunt, Karen Laugesen. She mentions that Karen had gotten an "instrument" from Annelise and Warder, and that Karen showed Gerda and Ellen some pictures from the areas around the place where Annelise and Warder live using that instrument (see the letters with object ID: 2011.013.107, 2011.013.108). In the letter, she also congratulates Warder and Annelise on the fact that Warder's brother has been made a partner in Warder's business, even though the old partner will stay partner for the next five years. She also mentions a vacation to Harrison Hot Springs, Canada, that Annelise and Warder went on in late December, and she writes that Warder probably needed it after the long negotiations about his business. She also comments on what Annelise has written to her about their Christmas day party where they were 13 people gathered, and she comments on Annelise and Warder's newly installed modern kitchen. She is very fascinated by the fact that it has a cooker hood. She writes that she is very sorry to hear about Annelise's father's illness, and she writes that she hopes that he is getting better. She mentions that he has now gotten some pills, which might help, and she also writes that having a break from all the work on the new property during the winter months might also do him good. She is worried, she writes, that both he and Magda, Annelise's mother, have overstrained themselves working on their new home. About her own life, she writes that she and Ellen are busy, as they are attending a course on how to sew dresses. She also writes about Carsten and Henrik Wiwel, the young sons of some friends, and about how other members of the family are doing. 8 1/2 x 10 3/4. Envelope: Both the address in the top corner to the viewer's left and the address in the middle of the front of the envelope are written in hand in blue ink. In the top corner to the viewer's right are two green Danish postage stamps with pictures of king Frederik IX. Across these is a postal mark. To the viewer's left of this are two purple stamps; one has the text "Luftpost / (Par Avion)" and the other has a picture of a post horn and a crown. Below the address in the top corner to the viewer's left is a blue sticker with the text "LUFTPOST / PAR AVION" in white inside a white frame. There is a pre-printed stamp in the bottom corner to the viewer's left with the same design. Along the edge to the viewer's right, "ans 4/3/56" (sic) is written in pencil. The back side of the envelope is blank. The envelope is sent from Gerda Clement, Sønderborg, to Mrs. Annelise Stoaks, Fox Island, Washington. The postal mark is dated January 29, 1957. 5 x 6. |
