Scope / Description |
Postcard with a color illustration of a large ship titled "S/S Frederik VIII - København-New York." Mailed to Mrs. Neergaard from Carrie and M__. 5 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L This postcard came from an album (1992.155.007a) that belonged to the donor's mother. The album itself is American. The contents include objects she received before leaving Denmark, before marrying Christian, and many after their marriage. The donor's grandparents, Peder and Kirsten Neergaard were farmers from Nødager, Denmark (the Grenaa-Æbeltoft area of Jylland). In 1888, they immigrated to Canada with their three sons, Christian (this postcard's recipient), Achton, and Sophus. Peder and his sons worked on the Canadian railroad. The family moved south to Washington state and worked their way east to Wisconsin. Kirsten Neergaard died in 1905. Peder asked her sister, Maren Jensen, still in Denmark to come to America to help with the family. She arrived with Olivia Poulsen in Kenosha, WI. Olivia married Christian in 1907. Together they had Kirsten (1908) and the donor, Rita Neergaard Hansen (1912). Olivia died in 1930. Christian Neergaard on WOH. |
