Letter from Ditte Larsen to Annelise Stoaks. Matching envelope. Letter: Three pages, each with writing on the front. The letter is written in hand in blue ink on ruled paper. In the top corner to the viewer's left on the first page, it says "Søndag". The letter opens "Kære Annelise!", and above that are a few lines written upside-down. At the bottom of the third page, the letter is signed "Ditte". Below are a few more handwritten lines. At the beginning of the letter, Ditte thanks Annelise for her Christmas letter. She then writes that she had lost Annelise's address, probably because a stamp collector took the envelope. She then congratulates Annelise on her upcoming birthday on February 2, and she writes that the 18th birthday of her son, Jørgen, is on February 3. She writes that he is getting tall, and that he is still happy with his work, but that he has had problems with his knee. She then writes about her daughter, Kis, who has recently had her appendix removed. She writes that Kis is getting her confirmation in March, and that Ditte is busy making the clothes for Kis. She writes that she is sorry that Annelise cant be there for the party, but she promises to send a picture. She writes that they will be 50 persons at the party. She then writes that it is now 10 years ago that she and Annelise were hospitalized together. She writes that everything is as usual with the business, even though that it is a time of high prices and money are scarce. She then writes about a trip to Switzerland that Harald, her husband, went on, and she writes about a trip that she herself went on to Austria. She asks Annelise to give Ditte's greetings to Annelise's parents. Then she writes about the winter weather in Denmark. At the end of the letter she asks Annelise to send Kis a greeting for her confirmation. At the top of the first page, she writes that she will send Annelise a picture of herself taken on January 16, 1957, so that Annelise can see that Ditte is growing old. 8 1/4 x 10 1/2.\ Envelope: The envelope has a white and red border at the top and bottom edge of the envelope. In the top corner to the viewer's left is a blue stamp with white writing on it; it says "LUFTPOST / PAR AVION". In the top corner to the viewer's right are three Danish postage stamps, each with a picture of king Frederik IX. One is grey and placed upside-down, and two are olive green and horizontally oriented. Across those two is a black stamp with the text "IDRÆT skaber / SUNDHED / og GLÆDE" within a black frame. Across the grey stamp is a round postal mark. Both the address on the front and the one on the back are written in hand in blue pen. Below the address on the back are two stickers in the shape of red and white Danish flags. The address on the front is for "Mrs. Annelise Stoaks", and the one on the back is for "E. Larsen". The postal mark on the front is from Nykøbing Falster, and it is dated January 30, 1956. 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. |
