Scope / Description |
Letter to Annelise from Karen Jensen. Matching envelope. Letter: One page with writing on both sides. The letter is vertically oriented. On the front of the page is a drawing of the Marble Church in Copenhagen. The drawing is horizontally oriented and it takes up one quarter of the page in the top corner to the viewer's right. The piece of paper was folded to form a card with the drawing on the front of the card, and so it has one vertical fold and one horizontal fold. With the page unfolded, the letter begins between the edge to the viewer's left and the drawing. It fills half the page and opens "Kære Annelise!". Above that is the place and date, "København 28-1-1957". On the quarter of a page that is right below the drawing, there are a few lines of black print, which are also horizontally oriented. The letter continues on the back side of the page, where it takes up one quarter of a page. The letter is signed "din hengivne Tante Karen". At the beginning of the letter, Karen congratulates Annelise on her upcoming birthday. She also thanks her for the Christmas greeting with pictures of Annelise's dogs, and she writes about her Christmas eve. She mentions that Annelise's maternal aunt, Karen Laugesen, is happy not to have to go to the office anymore. Then she writes about a dinner with some friends, and mentions that she knows that Annelise is in correspondence with these friends' daughter, who lives in England. She then writes about the weather in Denmark and in the U.S. Then she writes that she has heard from Annelise's mother that Annelise's father is ill, and she writes that she hopes he is now better. She writes that she has sent a small package to Annelise, and she hopes that it will reach her on her birthday. She also writes that Annelise's two paternal aunts have visited her. 8 1/2 x 11. Envelope: Both the address on the front and the one on the back is written in hand in blue ink. In the top corner to the viewer's left on the front of the envelope, "Air-Mail" is written in hand in blue ink with a wavy line under it. In the top corner to the viewer's right and along the top edge of the envelope are four purple, Danish postage stamps with pictures of king Frederik IX. Across these are two postal marks. The address on the front is written in the middle of the page. Near the bottom corner to the viewer's left, it says "7/57" in pencil. The back of the envelope is blank except for the address at the top center. The envelope was opened at the top. The envelope is addressed to "Mrs. W. W. Stoaks" and sent from "K. Jensen". Both the postal marks on the front of the envelope are from Copenhagen, and they are both dated January 29, 1957. 4 1/2 x 5 3/4. |
