Scope / Description |
Certificate: The horizontally oriented vaccination certificate is printed on a piece of blue paper. The printed text is written in Danish and includes lines for handwritten text. It is titled "Koppeattest" and dated "1898". It was issued to Klara Kristine Kristensen. Frame (initially framed - UNFRAMED 4/2015): The certificate is held within a wooden frame with glass across the front. The frame is painted gold over a layer of red to give the appearance of gold leaf. The back of the frame is covered with a piece of brown paper. A sticker at the center of the bottom edge of the paper is from The Picture Show, a custom framing store and workshop in Omaha, NE. In both bottom corners of the back of the frame is a circular foam pad. Attached along the top edge of the back is a metal framing bracket with teeth along the bottom edge. Dimensions: Certificate: L (8.250in.) x W (6.750in.) Frame: L (9.250in.) x W (7.563in.) x D (0.875in.) Provenance: The vaccination certificate was issued to Klara Kristine Kristensen. She immigrated to the United States from Odense, Denmark, stopping in Pennsylvania and then Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her father and brothers decided to immigrate first and ended up in Uehling, Nebraska. All farmers in that area wrote back to Denmark for their women to come join them and they needed a vaccination certificate to get there through Ellis Island. Klara died in the 1940s and was the grandmother of the donor's wife. |
