Scope / Description |
Charter for Danish Brotherhood in America Lodge No. 1 entitled "Omaha" in Omaha, Nebraska. The large script at top reads, "THE SUPREME LODGE/OF/The Danish Brotherhood in America/TO ALL WHOM/IT MAY CONCERN:". The design at top center is a bible and below that is a large key and anchor that are crossed. To the viewer's left is a spade and to the viewer's right is an "L"-shaped ruler under a circle. The text of the charter notes positions for Lodge No. 1; "P.P. P.O. Boisen, P. P.H. Johnsen, V.P. N.C. Nielsen, S. E. Petersen" and others. It is signed by the Supreme President "Wind" and it is dated July 1st, 1882 at the bottom. There are two gold seals at the bottom of the charter. Under the seal at viewer's left reads, "COPY of Original Charter/dated November 26, 1883". The whole charter is surrounded by a border of printed foliage. The maker's mark at bottom center reads, "Lith. A. Hageboeck, Davenport, Iowa". The artifact is housed under glass in an ornately designed wood frame. The thick frame angles out and up to a raised external perimeter. The internal perimeter is painted black and the rest is painted a metallic gold. A carving design around the raised external perimeter resembles a braided rope. The space in-between the two perimeters is carved with an intricate leaf motif. |
