Description |
Framed color print of an assortment of Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales. Andersen himself is depicted sitting on a white bench in the viewer's lower right corner, his black top hat at his side on the bench and a book resting on his lap. He has on a rust colored long coat and dark blue pants. The scene shows a small stream running beside him with a small village beyond. There is a castle on the hill in the distance, and clouds above. Throughout the print, one can identify almost 40 characters from many of Andersen's fairy tales, including the Little Mermaid, the Ugly Duckling, the Chimney Sweep, and Thumbelina. There are characters in the water, in the village, and in the sky. In the lower right is printed "Hallander / 1937-1942". Inside a wood frame whitewashed, with a raised outer edge. Original backing consists of brown paper over the entire surface with a white paper label at the bottom center that reads "Hans Christian Andersens Fairy Tales" and an address label for the donor in the lower left corner. At the top center is a green and gold sticker that reads "MONTE'S / Unusual Gifts / ROCHESTER, MINN." There is a strip of yellow paper at the top left, and hanging wire stretched across. (The backing may be replaced after cataloging.) |

This print originally belonged to the donor's father Einar's cousin Johana Thomsen of Copenhagen who owned the copyright. It was presented to Einar M. Lange and his wife Laura Bergesen Lange as a gift. Einar was born in 1909 in Racine, Wisconsin to Danish immigrant parents, and died in 1999. He married Laura in 1933. The print hung in Einar's living room in Rochester, Minnesota and then in Sun City, Arizona. It was later inherited by his daughter Loeymae, who hung it in her own home. |
